Dear families,

We hope you’ve enjoyed a restful holiday break and are feeling refreshed for the start of Term 2.

As we head into a new term, we’re excited to share a preview of some wonderful upcoming events — a fundraiser cinema soirée featuring the exclusive screening of Nature – The Call for Reconciliation, and a European Aussie night out for parents — all fun opportunities to connect as a community.

We’re also looking back on a vibrant and inspiring Term 1, filled with rich French learning experiences and whole-school celebrations around International Francophonie Week in March.

La Francophonie brings together people and cultures around the world who share the French language, with an estimated 396 million French speakers across five continents.

Read on for highlights from the classroom, enrolments for FANS extracurricular classes, snapshots of student learning, and important dates and news for the term ahead.

Semaine de la Francophonie

It’s been a term full of celebrations, including la Semaine internationale de la francophonie / International Francophonie Week, where students in the FANS bilingual program took part in learning centred around Francophone countries, cultures, and language. Some of these activities were done in partnership with Camberwell Primary School (CPS), a bilingual school in Victoria.

Outside of the classroom, the entire school enthusiastically participated in recess and lunchtime activities. A huge "Merci beaucoup!" to the teachers of French, who organised an entirely new program of interactive, fun and educational activities this year!

New activities
Record numbers of students of all ages flocked to participate in the new sessions, including the Moroccan dance class, awalé (African chess),
rocket making (French Guiana), volcano building (Reunion Island), traditional table games (estaminets of Northern France), soap sculpting (chambranles of New Caledonia), and the classic pétanque.

A big thank you to the parent volunteers who helped organise the second-hand French book sales and the packing of the canteen special Tropéziennes! These are important contributions that go a long way to spread joy in the community.

In the classroom

Semaine de la francophonie

Early Stage 1

Kindy classes were busy learning a French song to present to Camberwell Primary School, and they then learned the CPS song in a video exchange.

Stage 1

Students sent their presentations of Belgium (Y1) and Senegal (Y2) to partner school Camberwell Primary School (CPS) in Victoria, and KHPS received CPS students’ presentations about Morocco (Y1) and Madagascar (Y2).  Students then tested their knowledge with a comprehension Kahoot quiz.

Stage 2

Francophone stream students took on the challenge of creating a presentation about a French- speaking country or territory. Bravo!

Illustration competition with CPS
(Camberwell Primary School)

The Year 3 to 6 students (Stages 2 & 3) participated in this term’s Illustration Competition of a French word used in English. This year's theme was "les virelangues", or tongue twisters!

Students at KHPS voted for the best Camberwell Primary School (CPS) illustrations, and vice versa!

Congratulations to the winners for their excellent work!

Lève ta voix!
AAFEBS reading aloud competition

Francophone stream students in Years 1 to 6 had the option of participating in “Leve ta voix! Raise your voice!,reading aloud competition across Australia as part of an AAFEBS (Australia Association of French-English Bilingual Schools) network collaboration.

The jury was most impressed by students' wonderful presentations and high reading level across all categories. Thanks to the parents who helped their children select a text and prepare for the competition.

Teachers will announce the winning students in Term 2. The winners will then go on to compete against other AAFEBS schools over Zoom. Merci à tous!

Alliance Française
Festival du Film Français

As a proud partner and new sponsor of the 37th edition of the Alliance Française French Film Festival (AF FFF) in Sydney, a contingent of 10 guests from Killarney Heights proudly attended the opening gala of the festival, held in the beautiful State Theatre.

What a success! FANS members took advantage of discounted group tickets to watch five selected film sessions at nearby Roseville Cinemas.

Families enjoyed over 115 discounted tickets, with a total of 51 tickets sold to see the crowd favourite film "Cycle of Time" (C'était mieux demain), proving our continued love for French language cinema.

Zone Interdite episode screening

Families gathered in the school auditorium for an evening screening of the recent Zone Interdite documentary program that featured French expats living in Australia.

The episode featured the Dupuit family (with FANS President Jérémy Dupuit) and Killarney Heights Public School.

Thank you to everyone involved for making our school shine and for highlighting our unique French bilingual program to viewers in France.

The episode is now available on Youtube for anyone interested to see it at home and share with family and friends.

Journée Internationale de la Francophonie, Swiss style

FANS was honoured to attend the celebration of the International Day of La Francophonie in Sydney, generously hosted by Elisabeth Bösch Malinen, Consul General of the Consulate General of Switzerland in Sydney.

The evening assembled a diverse and inspiring community — including representatives of Francophone countries, educators, and passionate advocates of the French language.

This special occasion also marked Switzerland’s 30 years of membership in the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, highlighting the enduring importance of multilingualism, cultural exchange, and international cooperation.

FANS is proud to contribute to this shared vision by fostering bilingual education and nurturing a strong Francophone community here on Sydney's North Shore. Events like this remind us that language is not only a means of communication, but a bridge between cultures and a gateway to opportunity.
